Review: Holiday Inn Express Durban – Umhlanga | Hit or Miss Staff Hospitality
As an IHG Platinum Elite member this stay was really mixed for me. Sindy (housekeeping), Lim (? young man in the breakfast area), Shona, Nothando and Velaphi were a pure pleasure to interact with. They always had a smile and was willing to help in any way that they could.
Then there were people who weren’t so welcoming. Like Trisha in the breakfast area who seemingly bumped into me on purpose twice my first day down for breakfast and she never had a smile. I had a different housekeeping person before Sindy. I don’t do daily housekeeping so my second day I asked for extra shower gel and towels so I wouldn’t have to get housekeeping again (I was staying for six nights). She gave me one extra shower gel and told me I couldn’t have extra towels. On top of her rationing out supplies she stepped in my room and closed the door to send a text on her phone and claimed she was texting her supervisor but there is no reason to hide if you are texting your supervisor.
The rooms were spacious. The bathroom was tight, but I did like that the shower was spacious. The wifi was a bit inconsistent. They said they were updating the system, so hopefully when the update is complete it will be better. There is construction going on in front of the hotel, so it’s noisy during the day. The gym is small, but it has the necessary equipment you need to get a decent workout. Room service is provided by the Butcher Block steakhouse next door. The food is really good and they will bring a card machine for you to pay for your food on the spot if you ask.
The location is great. It’s about a ten minute walk along the side street to Gateway Mall that offers a variety of shopping and dining options. If you can’t walk the hills catching an Uber around the area is very affordable.
